My son Samuel wasn't a big crawler (he preferred to walk on his hands and feet) but he still somehow went through pants like crazy. If you've read some of my previous posts on buying children's clothing second hand, you can imagine that I was not all that interested in purchasing brand new clothing for our next child, especially since what we had was very good quality.
And so instead of buying new pants that our new baby would learn to crawl in and tear all to pieces, I decided to patch the old ones, and here's how I did it.
Step 1:
First I laid out the pants I wanted to give new life to to see how bad the damage was. I was fortunate; there was one small hole and each knee was worn. There were also two small stains that I remembered being unable to remove - I think they may have been pen.
Step 2:
I chose a sheet of felt (I used acrylic so that the colours wouldn't run and the felt wouldn't 'felt' any more.) I selected my shape, a circle, and my templates - two lid tops. Then I traced and cut out the felt.
Step 3:
Then over the course of two evenings I embroidered random designs on my four patches. Felt doesn't fray, and so it makes it perfect for a job like this.
Here are some close ups of the patches.
After the patches were embroidered I sewed them on to the worn or stained areas with a running stitch or a blanket stitch.
There you go. A very easy solution.
