I'm always looking out for new ways to save money, especially in the kitchen, and I really feel as though we may have hit upon a great solution for making our 'meat budget' more reasonable. A local butcher has started to offer freezer packs, and we bought one:
Which I classily photographed on top of my washing machine, as you can see here.
David and I had discussed trying one of these freezer packs before, but it always seemed like a big monetary outlay in my opinion. But, if it turned out to be cheaper in the long run, maybe it was worth the inital expense. This is the $59.99 option. There was also a $49.99 and a $79.99 box, but I liked what was in this one more. The other two options both included hot dogs, which I can never be creative with, and sausages, which are one of the few things I don't like from this butcher. Although, all that being said, the butcher seemed quite happy to switch stuff around if we wanted.
And this is what was in our freezer pack.
5lb of local hamburger, individually packaged.
2lb steak (2 T-bones and a striploin, I believe)
2lb pork ribs (1lb per package)
4lbs chicken legs (came to 6 leg and thigh quarters, 2 of which were seasoned, and 2 thighs)
2 lbs chicken breast quarters (came to 3 large ones)
2 lbs pork chops (came to 3 large ones)
This is enough meat to easily feed our family for two weeks. And at roughly $60, that's $30 a week for meat, which is quite good considering this allows us to have meat for every dinner, which we don't usually do anyway. Actually, I was caught a little off guard by the amount of meat, frankly. I cook so much vegetarian fare on a regular basis that I've had a lot of trouble figuring out what to do with it all.
I also had trouble getting everything into my freezer. There was a lot of cramming.
We bought this pack nine days ago now (The Thursday before last) and still have 2 chicken thighs, 2 leg and thigh quarters, a chicken breast, a large pork chop and 2 lbs of ground beef left, so clearly this is an every two week purchase.
Next time, I think we'll switch out the pork ribs for some bacon.
Yet another way we're saving money this fall!
