Samuel used to sleep under a yellow wool blanket, piled high with all of his favourite hand-knit afghans from various friends and relatives, until he discovered (while I was cleaning the storage room) Daddy's old single, zip-up sleeping bag.
Well, once he saw that sleeping bag it was love at first sight. He had to have it, and so it became his blanket. I was never a big fan of it, though. For one thing, even unzipped and laid flat, it still had a big zipper on three sides that couldn't, I imagine, be comfortable to sleep with. Secondly, his bedding gets wet a lot, and washing and drying a sleeping bag every time this happens is a major pain. And it's ugly; you can't tuck it in or lay it nice and flat and so his bed always looked messy and unmade. Frankly, we make enough mess as we are; we don't need to invite more into our lives in terms of bedding.
But Sam loved that sleeping bag, so he kept it. Lately, however, it's been getting pretty warm, even at night. Samuel needed a lighter-weight blanket. So, tonight I made him one. It's flannel on one side and cotton broadcloth on the other, bright and cheerful and covered in pictures of construction equipment, because that's what our boy loves these days. There isn't a pattern, just your typical 'right sides together' deal, and it only cost about $10 and 20 minutes to make, but boy is he happy.
And no more sleeping bag. At least until the fall.
