If we have not genuine grace in the family circle, all our outward and public plausibility merely springs from a fear of the world or from the slimy, putrid pool of our own selfishness. I tell you the home is a mighty test of character. What you are at home you are everywhere, whether you demonstrate it or not. -TALMAGE

13 days overdue.
The worst part of packing for a scheduled hospital birth with an uncertain outcome is that you have time to consider all of the ins and outs of what to bring. Do you, for example, trust the piece of paper you were handed at 32 weeks when you met with the prenatal nurse that clearly stated you should bring baby clothes? Or should you trust the labour and delivery nurse you spoke to who said that those little cotton undershirts were provided for you. And if you decide to pack them, how many should you pack? Should you bring your 'going home outfit' and leave it at that? Or do you bring sleepers? As many clothes as you would use at home over a given period? What if, as with Samuel, you stay in the hospital three long days after the birth - do you pack enough clothes for a newborn for THREE DAYS? Surely not. This is not a call out for my comment box to be flooded with suggestions on what to bring to the hospital! As you can see above...I am packed.
In the end, this is what we're bringing: a duffel bag with a few bits and pieces for everyone, a tote with a dvd player and some books, and a carseat. We're packing, not for the worst case scenario perhaps, but with realism in mind. If I'm in the hospital for a few days, this will see me mostly through it.
Samuel is packed as well, ready for his 'on his own' adventure away from parents for the first time in his short life.
All of the women who were due either before or after me, within a two week radius on both sides of my due date, have given birth. The cheese stands alone.
And for today, the final thing I could think of to induce labour...a pedicure.
Which didn't work. I'm still pregnant.
