Samuel is ill again. The conversation with my parents last night went along the lines of "How's our grandson?" "Oh, he's sick again." "AGAIN? Why? What's wrong? What's the matter with that child?"
What's the matter with him? Well, he's one and he licks shoes. Babies are gross, what can I tell you.
And so I've spent the last few days preparing all of his favourite foods to get him to eat, and pushing fluids and wrestling the nasal aspirator into action. Tonight he seemed weezy and his cough is loose, so I've dug out the humidifier and cleaned it and set it up in the room for some added comfort. It can't be too much longer now; he's been sick for days.
He was pretty good at church, though, for which I'm very thankful! When David got up to preach I was all fluttery inside, but then he started to talk and it just felt so right. Like at our wedding, when the vows just fit somehow. Of course I'll marry you, and equally as much, this is absolutely what you're meant to do. From a spiritual side, it worked; the message was clear, the points were relevant and everything was backed up scripturally. From a congregational side, it worked; it was tailored to the people in the pews, who were mostly an older crowd in a small country church. And from a practical side, the sermon worked. It wasn't too short or too long, no one looked away from him at the pulpit to fiddle with something or flip idly through the bulletin, everyone laughed at the joke he used, it was a solid sermon. And afterwards we looked at each other when we had a moment alone during coffee time and said "Are we ever glad that's over!" The first sermon is just, well it's hard. And now the next one isn't until June 5th so David has some time to focus on his course.
Thank you for all of your prayers. I know they helped get us over this first exciting and nervous day. On another note, I've never kissed the preacher before! I could get used to that perk!
