Sometimes I have trouble getting motivated to do my chores, although I've tried just about everything! The only technique that has unfailingly worked for me is a grown up version of the reward system, which I used to think was silly, but now I'm just all a-twitter over! I do it one of two ways:
1) I pick something I really want to watch on tv and use it as a reward. So that would look something like this: "Okay, Amy, the new episode of A Priest, A Monk and A Rabbi is coming on the documentary channel at 7pm. That's two hours away. Work as hard as you can at cleaning the kitchen and the bathroom for two hours and you can sit and watch it."
Alternatively, I work in stages to watch a show. For example, while the show plays I complete a chore that can be done at the same time (like knitting dishcloths, sewing on a button or folding laundry) or else I might just watch and not work at all. When the commercials come on I leave the room and get something done elsewhere. One commercial break is a load of dishes, a sweep of the bathroom floor, or the amount of time it takes to bring the garbage to the curb.
2) I find something, a 'treat', to make my chore more pleasant. Usually this consists of listening to something I've been looking forward to and really enjoy. Right now that means radio interviews of some of my favourite authors, or sermons that I've specially ordered and can't wait to hear. I haven't tried them, but I imagine audio books would also be a wonderful option. My rule is, as long as I'm working I can listen, but if I stop working I have to turn it off. Needless to say I want to keep working!
How about you? Do you encourage yourself in your housework?
