When David and I moved in together one of our very first purchases was a guestbook. It was more David's idea than mine, to be honest, his parents had had one and he thought it was a good idea. I don't remember where exactly we picked ours up but it has become one of our treasured family traditions to have our guests sign the book with a little note commemorating their visit. When they've left I often flip back through the pages that document visits past and re-read everyone's old comments. There are names that appear so frequently for a period of time and then, as life takes people in different directions, those names are replaced by others. Personalities shine through: the reluctant signer who scribbles only "Thank you" and those who take the opportunity to tell us a little story with a paragraph of text. I like them all and they represent our life together and those who have been there with us - four apartments and three cities later.

For many years we had a guest book in our home and we would make it a point to give a guest book to couples whose weddings I performed. Somewhere in the midst of our many moves and as we got older we started finding we would forget to have people sign the book. At first we would fill in the names of our guests but we found that we were even forgetting to do that, and eventually stopped using it altogether. That is to our detriment I am sure. However, on the other side of it - as we are getting older we also spend far more time being entertained now than entertaining. I believe it is still a good idea and the memories of visits and the accompanying comments are treasures indeed.
I think it is a splendid idea!
I love it!
